Advertisement Mason said his decision came 20 years after Racine voters first elected him to the Wisconsin Assembly on Nov. 7, 2006. "It has been the honor of my professional life to represent the Racine community," Mason said in a statement to WISN 12 News. "After 20 years, with humility and gratitude, I believe now is the time to pass the torch of leadership on to the next generation." Mason was first elected mayor in a 2017 special election after his predecessor resigned midterm. He subsequently won two full terms. In announcing his decision, Mason highlighted housing, public safety, education and infrastructure initiatives undertaken during his tenure. He cited more than $300 million in housing and development investments, including Belle City Square, the Breakwater, Hotel Verdant, Ajax and Gold Medal Lofts. He also pointed to the Lincoln King housing development, which is expected to add 40 affordable homeownership opportunities, and a home repair program that he said has awarded more than 2,100 grants of $10,000 each to city residents. Mason said the city raised more than $60 million to remove lead pipes from the drinking water system. He also cited a 47% reduction in gun crime and the establishment of the Department of Community Safety, though the announcement did not specify the period over which gun crime declined. Mason said he plans to spend the remainder of his term working to open the new Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center and health facilities next to Julian Thomas Elementary School. He also plans to work with the next governor and Legislature on changes to shared revenue and additional state resources for Racine.
